Lifelong AIDS Alliance to Raise Funds for HIV/AIDS Community at 3rd Annual Benefit Breakfast on March 8

SEATTLE – February 22 — On Thursday, March 8, Lifelong AIDS Alliance will host its 3rd annual benefit breakfast at the Red Lion Hotel. The breakfast is an opportunity for the community to come together and make a charitable difference in the lives of those affected by and living with HIV and AIDS. In 2011, the event raised $120,000.

The breakfast, sponsored by Swedish Medical Center, will focus on the past, present, and future of HIV/AIDS in Seattle. Lifelong and fellow community advocacy partners have been leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS since the beginning. Now, 30 years into this epidemic, Lifelong is shaping the conversation around health care reform as it relates to those affected by the disease. While the cost is free to attend, the suggestion donation for guests is $150.

The program includes a presentation of the 2012 Ned Behnke Leadership Award. The award is named after Ned Behnke, a prominent Seattle artist and community member who passed away from the disease in 1989.  Every year, the award is given to an individual who demonstrates exceptional vision and courage in promoting AIDS awareness in the community. This year’s award recipient is Barbara Velategui, founder of the AIDS Student Peer Educators at Newport High School (ASPEN) program. ASPEN is a nationally acclaimed program that convenes youth leaders to discuss HIV/AIDS prevention.

The keynote speaker is Robert Greenwald, the Managing Director of the Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School. Robert was named a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS in 2010 and is regarded as the nation’s leader in health care reform for people living with HIV.
